Blue Moon… What is all the hoopla over the “blue*” moon on new years eve? What will it look like? Well I’m guessing that it will look like every other blue moon. A blue moon is nothing more than a second full moon within the same calendar month. Since the moons cycle as viewed from the earth is approximately 29.5 days long a blue moon occurs about every 2 and 1/2 years.
The lunar cycle is nothing more than the moon returning to the same position as it was before. A detail about the lunar cycle for the more cerebral of you: The lunar cycle when viewed from a vantage point other than earth is about 27.3 days long. The reason it is longer when viewed from earth is that since the earth has moved in its orbit the moon has to move a little farther to catch up, so when viewed from earth the cycle is about two days longer.
*It won’t be blue in color.
